How pricing works (Tariff 15-C)

Moving Cab is a permitted Washington household goods carrier, so every job is priced under the Washington UTC Tariff 15-C (Effective January 1, 2026). Before the move we send a written binding or non-binding estimate with crew size, hours, mileage, and every accessorial charge listed line by line.

Local (hourly) moves within 55 miles (Tariff Section 3, Item 230). We charge a truck-plus-driver hourly rate up to $154.38/hr (up to three hours) or up to $149.40/hr (over three hours), plus each additional worker at up to $134.48/hr (first three hours) or $129.83/hr after. Minimum one hour during regular hours (Mon–Fri, 8:00–17:00); four-hour minimum for off-hours, Saturday, Sunday, or holidays. Time is recorded on the bill of lading; breaks and interruptions caused by the crew are not billed.

Long-distance (mileage-rated) moves over 55 miles (Tariff Section 2, Items 105 & 200). Rate per pound depends on loaded distance and shipment weight brackets (500–999, 1,000–1,999, 2,000–3,999, 4,000–7,999, 8,000–11,999, 12,000–15,999, 16,000+ lbs). Minimum shipment weight is calculated at seven pounds per cubic foot of properly loaded van space. Overnight per-diem up to $336.81 per employee, per night, may apply.

Accessorials that can add to either format:
• Stairs up to $2.53 per 100 lbs per flight, elevators up to $3.77 per 100 lbs (Item 165).
• Long carry (over 75 ft between truck and door) up to $2.53 per 100 lbs per extra 50 ft (Item 160).
• Piano handling up to $157.71 per shipment ($63.11 for spinets), plus $31.53 first flight of stairs, $15.76 each additional (Item 170).
• Bulky-article additives (e.g. auto, motorcycle, jet ski, hot tub) per Item 140.
• Packing labor and containers (Items 195, 196, 225) — cartons, dish packs, mattress cartons, wardrobe boxes, flat-screen TV cartons, mirror cartons.
• Overtime up to $32.85 per person per hour outside regular hours (Items 190, 240).

Estimate math per Tariff Item 80. If your estimate is binding, the carrier may not charge more than the binding amount. If non-binding, delivery requires payment of no more than 110% of the estimate; any balance has at least 30 days to pay; carrier cannot require more than 125% of the non-binding estimate without a signed supplemental estimate. Question 2

Insurance and valuation options

Accepted Answer

Under Tariff 15-C, Item 90 every household goods carrier in Washington must offer the same three loss and damage protection (valuation) options. You choose one on the written estimate and the bill of lading before loading begins.

Option 1 — Basic Value Protection. Included at no cost. Pays $0.60 per pound per lost or damaged article, regardless of that item’s actual value. This is the minimum liability a carrier must assume and is the best fit only for inexpensive shipments.

Option 2 — Replacement Cost Coverage with a $300 deductible. Charged per $100 of weight value (the greater of your declared value or $9.16 × net weight), between $0.55 and $1.78 per $100. The deductible applies once per shipment, not per item. In case of covered loss or damage, the carrier repairs, reimburses, or replaces items above the $300.

Option 3 — Replacement Cost Coverage with no deductible. Charged per $100 of weight value (same greater-of calculation) between $0.66 and $2.16. Full replacement value up to the declared value; no per-claim deductible.

Important limits in all options. Antiques, fine art, collectibles, and memorabilia revert to depreciated or fair market value even under Options 2 and 3 — you must declare them in advance on a separate inventory. If you do not select an option on the bill of lading, Option 2 (Replacement Cost with deductible) becomes the default and you pay the associated charge.

Claims must be filed in writing within nine months of delivery (or nine months after a reasonable time has elapsed for non-delivery). You can always purchase additional third-party insurance yourself for jewellery, precious metals, or shipments that exceed these limits.

Question 3

Items we cannot transport

Under Tariff 15-C, Item 90 and the contract terms printed on the back of every bill of lading, carriers may not accept the following for shipment:
• Explosives, fireworks, and ammunition.
• Dangerous goods and flammables (propane tanks, fuel, solvents, open containers of paint or chemicals).
• Any property that could damage carrier equipment or the rest of the load.

You may include these items but the carrier is not responsible for their condition or safe delivery:
• Coins, currency, deeds, notes, postage stamps, letters, drafts, or any valuable papers.
• Jewelry, precious stones, or precious metals.
• Items of extraordinary value (unless declared on a separate high-value inventory).
• Items requiring temperature control, household pets, live plants, and perishable food.
• Furniture made from pressboard, particleboard, or similar pressed materials (Item 90 expressly excludes these from liability because they break apart during normal transit).

Pianos, gun safes, fine art, grandfather clocks, and museum-quality pieces are normally shipped with specialty partners or custom crating; we coordinate the referral and still handle the rest of your move on the same estimate. If we discover a prohibited item at load time we will document it and ask you to remove it before we can proceed.

Question 4

Furniture disassembly and packing prep

Before we arrive, empty drawers on anything with glass, mirrors, or heavy doors, clear the top of dressers and bookcases, and tag any pieces that have old damage so the crew notes it correctly on the inventory at origin. Let us know about IKEA-style press-fit furniture, antiques, and grandfather clocks during booking so we allocate the right time and materials.

On move day we bag and label hardware, photograph complex assemblies when it helps reassembly, and pad every panel for transit. Under Tariff Item 65, if the customer is packing their own boxes, they must be clearly packed, labeled, and marked "fragile" or "breakable"; the carrier is not liable for internal breakage of customer-packed goods unless negligence can be shown in handling. We are glad to repack questionable boxes — there may be a modest charge for the extra labor and materials per Item 195.

Pricing-relevant details. Large-screen TVs (40″+) need flat-screen TV cartons (up to $501.82 each, Item 195), mirrors use mirror cartons (up to $67.76), and front-load washers are prepared with a washer packing kit ($60.00–$186.25, Item 62) and a servicing/re-servicing charge on both ends. Custom crates for glass or marble tops are quoted per cubic foot. All materials — tape, bubble wrap, paper, shrink wrap — are included in the packing charge and may not be billed separately (Tariff Items 195 & 196).

Reassembly at the new place follows the same labels and photos so your setup matches what you had. Question 5

Office moves and commercial relocations

We plan commercial moves in phases so your business keeps operating. Common areas and storage first, then department by department in an order you approve. Workstations are numbered to match your new floor plan so setup is predictable. After-hours and weekend windows are available — per Tariff Item 240 this may trigger overtime rates (up to $32.84 per person per hour or a four-hour minimum for off-hours moves), and we always disclose this on the signed estimate before we schedule.

IT disconnect and reconnect stays with your internal team or MSP unless you contract that separately. We protect monitors with padding and flat-screen cartons, wrap towers, and crate server and networking racks on request. Cable trays, wall-mounted displays, signage, and artwork are discussed up front so we bring the right crates and anchors.

Files and sensitive materials travel in lockable totes when you require it. Our crews are background-checked, wear company apparel, and carry proof of MC 1551486, USDOT 4079187, HG 071280, and ODOT 051093 credentials. We can prioritize executive suites or customer-facing floors so your team keeps answering the phone while the move progresses, and we coordinate elevator reservations and loading-dock times with your building management.

Question 6

Long-distance and storage (SIT) options

Accepted Answer

For moves over 55 miles we quote by mileage and weight under Tariff Item 200, based on actual weight at a certified scale or constructive weight (7 lbs per cubic foot of loaded van space). Shipments of 5,000 lbs or more are dispatched direct. Lighter loads may be consolidated unless you agree in writing to a minimum 5,000-lb rate for expedited delivery (Item 145). We document mileage with route software and share the calculation on the estimate.

Storage-in-Transit (SIT), Item 100. If closing dates do not line up, we can place the shipment in warehouse storage for up to 90 days. Charges include transportation to the warehouse, warehouse handling in/out (up to $13.87 per 100 lbs), a 30-day storage block ($0.98–$9.04 per 100 lbs) with valuation protection continuing per Item 90(11), and final delivery when you are ready. We give you a 30-day notice before any rate change and preserve the original tariff in effect on the loading date through final delivery.

Storage-in-Vehicle (SIV), Item 101. Where the whole shipment can stay on a locked, secured van for up to 15 days, SIV may be a lower-cost alternative at up to $213.10 per 24 hours. Liability stays with Moving Cab throughout SIV at the valuation option you chose on the bill of lading.

Every long-distance quote documents the mileage, weight bracket, per-diem exposure for overnight stays (up to $336.81 per employee per night), stairs/long-carry/piano expectations, and any additional stops (Items 155, 160, 165, 170). You sign a binding or non-binding estimate before we dispatch, so you know exactly how the price is built.
